Message to be fair though you sometimes won't have physical damage to the crank where you can see it with the naked eye. One good way of ensuring the cranks are concentric on both mains and rods is to do a run out test with an indicator prior to going to assembly. But as you stated most times its contingent on oil clearances but couple that with dimensional obscurity and either way the consumer is doomed.
